The peta2 Street Team brings the message of animal liberation to Virginia Commonwealth University this week. The team has a traveling display set up near Cabell Library which highlights the worldwide mistreatment of animals. The group hands out literature discussing the drawbacks of factory farming and the benefits of vegetarianism.

According to Sangeeta Kumar, M.Ed., coordinator of the Animal Liberation Project at the Norfolk, VA-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the display challenges the mindset that allows people to oppress and hurt others. The message was inspired by Dick Gregory's words. Gregory asked activists to be animal abolitionists, speaking up animals who can't demand freedom for themselves. Kumar said the exhibit is "shaking people up. It's to get people to think..."

The peta2.com web site asks, "Does the task of saving billions of animals’ lives seem a little overwhelming to you? It’s simple. We just need you to rock the world, make a stink, change minds, and change the world. In other words, join the peta2 Street Team.

"The Street Team promotes animal rights at a grassroots level, spreading awareness throughout your community, making sure that our message is visible and heard."

Members of the team spent a month on the road visiting college campuses and local schools.
